MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing comprises producing automotive products such as vehicle, vehicle parts and related components with the help of machines, tools, chemical, processing or formulation and in turn supports the Automotive Sales functions by providing vehicles / finished goods.

Manufacturing can be divided into three major units:

  • Small Manufacturing Units - Tier 2, 3 Suppliers
  • Medium Manufacturing Units- Tier 1 Suppliers
  • Large Manufacturing Units- OEM & JOINT VENTURES (JV)

AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING is considered as one of the most important pillars of Automobile Industry as a whole encompassing processes including Pressing, Welding, Machining, Painting, Assembly, Quality & Maintenance. Refer Below figure:

BRANCHES OF MANUFACTURING
MANUFACTURING (SHOP WISE)
  • 1. Sheet Metal Forming

Sheet metal forming processes are those in which force is applied to a piece of sheet metal to modify its geometry rather than remove any material. The applied force stresses the metal beyond itsYield Strength, causing the material to plastically deform, but not to fail. By doing so, the sheet can be bent or stretched into a variety of complex shapes.

Education & Experience of Sheet Metal Forming is shown below:

  • 2. Metal Joining

Metal joining is a process that uses heat to melt or heating the metal upto a point just below the melting temperature. Joining metal by fusion is known as fusion welding. Without fusion, the process is known as solid-state welding. Fusion welding includes arc welding and laser welding, whereas solid-state welding includes processes such as friction stir welding (FSW) that is carried on below the melting temperature.

Heat treating (or heat treatment) is a group of industrial, thermal and metal working processes used to alter the physical, and sometimes chemical, properties of a material. The most common application is metallurgy. Heat treatments are also used in the manufacturing of many other materials, such as glass. Heat treatment involves the use of heating or chilling, normally to extreme temperatures, to achieve the desired result such as hardening or softening of a material. Heat treatment techniques include annealing, case hardening, precipitation strengthening, tempering, carburizing, normalizing and quenching.

  • 6. CASTING OPERATIONS

Casting is one of the oldest manufacturing processes. It is the first step in making most of the products. Steps: - Making the mould cavity - Material is liquefied by properly heating it in a suitable furnace. - Liquid material is poured into the prepared mould cavity - It is then allowed to solidify - The solidified material is taken out of the mould cavity, trimmed and made to give it the final shape of the product.

Automotive paint is a type of paint used on automobiles for both protection and decoration purposes. There are various types of processes using different technologies. Paint & Surface Treatment Surface Operation: Surface finishingentails a broad range of industrial processes that alter the surface of a manufactured item to achieve a certain property. [1] Finishing processes may be employed to improve appearance, adhesion orwettability, solderability, corrosion resistance, tarnish resistance, chemical resistance, wear resistance, hardness, modify electrical conductivity, remove burrs and other surface flaws, and control the surfacefriction. [1] [2] In limited cases some of these techniques can be used to restore original dimensions to salvage or repair an item. An unfinished surface is often called mill finish.
